The Devil/Hel

Acrylic on Hot Press Watercolor Paper

6 x 8″

Created for Ghost Gallery’s Art of Tarot Exhibition in 2021.

I’m moved by the gap between the myth and the meaning of both the Tarot’s Devil card and the Norse goddess Hel. Humans have a tendency to demonize change and the unkonwn, and Hel symbolizes the afterlife, and The Devil card represents attachment to our old baggage. I tried to create an image that has gentleness built into Hel’s fearsome aspect of intense change.

The original painting is sold, and embellished Giclee prints are available through my shop.
