Part of a series inspired by the sounds and motion we just barely catch as we walk in nature. 

The Overstory is the term for the highest levels of trees in a forest. Some birds live their entire lives in the overstory, rarely visiting the ground. We can’t see them, but we can hear them. I was inspired by searching the canopy for the source of the songs.

I love painting nature realistically when inspired to do so, but abstract work gives form to the experience of tapping into my own nature and instinct to really play with color and composition.

These pieces, while done with joy for what I experience here and now, is tinged by sadness when I consider that one day we will only have fleeting memories of this lushness in nature due to habitat loss and climate change.
